http://feministengineer.blogspot.com [Rants of a feminist engineer] Skookumchick and I have just come back from 3 days of camping out in the "wilderness" (or as close as we can come to it out in the Midwest) and are preparing to have 8 people to dinner (after the group making banana muffins for an additional 15 people). [Lizditz.typepad.com] I Speak of Dreams: Learning Disabilities: Once children regard themselves as writers, they go through their lives like vacuum cleaners, sucking up knowledge of written language.  They learn sound-symbol correspondences NOT because their entire class spends a week drilling on the "M" sound by eating M & M's and marshmallows, cutting pictures of items that begin with M's out of magazines, and chanting poems full of marvelous monkeys that kmunch on muffins.  Instead a child learns the M from seeing McDonald's Golden Arches rising up over the horizon as she drives with her family down the highway .and from using those same arches later to label her block building with the word MIN (mine).  Because writers need to know sound-letter corresondences, they learn the "S" sound from stop signs, and add it beside their drawing of a snake.
